Israel’s New Goverment & The Annexation Puzzle
After three elections and seventeen months of political deadlock, it was a relief for most Israelis when Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and rival Benny Gantz finally agreed on a deal to form a unity government. The political stalemate was actually broken by the coronavirus crisis, when Netanyahu took firm command of the nation’s battle against an “unseen enemy” and even counseled other national leaders on how to deal with the global health menace. Polls instantly gave him a decisive boost in the event of a looming fourth election, convincing Gantz to break away from his most anti-Bibi partners and team up with Netanyahu.
