The Bnei Menashe are a community in the hills of northeast India who trace their lineage to the tribe of Manasseh, one of the 10 tribes exiled from Israel in 722 BCE. For decades they’ve kept Shabbat and prayed in Hebrew, waiting for the chance to return. That return has grown urgent: ethnic violence in the region has burned homes and synagogues and displaced thousands, and the Israeli government has approved a mission to bring the rest of the community home by 2030.
